I became more patient and accepting that the driver in front of me, had as much right to be in that place at that given time.

Salt and ground black pepper to taste
On a greased baking pan, layer cauliflower, onion, Monterey Jack cheese, mozzarella cheese and Gouda cheese. Season with cayenne pepper, salt and ground black pepper. Pour milk over the mixture then cover with aluminum foil. Bake in a pre-heated oven (375 degrees F) for 40 to 45 minutes. Remove cover and continue baking for 20 to 30 minutes more or until top is browned.

My love for fudge has no discernible beginning as I review memories of decades ago. It’s one of these low-level cravings seldom satisfied due to the prohibitive rates for fudge in shops.

It seems to me they’d sell more if the prices were lower, but I should not complain since my consumption of sugar is already too large.

But fudge is much more than good to eat, and to experience an over-abundance is really delightful!

As I write these ideas, my fudge is in the kitchen, patiently awaiting the counter for me to come and appreciate its beauty. It’s wrapped in clear plastic revealing its deep brown color with occasional specks of white where chunks of walnut poke through to the uneven surface.

After adding chopped walnuts into the recipe I declare my fudge to be”health food.” And that reminds me of a question I read yesterday that asked,”If your grocery store has a section labeled’Health Food’ then what does that say about the food in the other sections of the shop?”

Nothing will dissuade me from my health food statement as I place another oversized chunk of fudge into my waiting mouth.

It compliments my early morning hot chocolate and is the best appetizer for lunch in addition to dessert for a dinner of any type.

One minute there’s a piece of fudge in my hands and another a few peanuts.

Speaking of peanuts reminds me that some people prefer to create peanut butter fudge.

Please let me point out that I eat more peanuts than anyone I know or have ever known, but I can’t get excited about mixing the two flavors. Folks put peanut butter on various different foods, and think it’s great, but to me the traditional peanut butter sandwich or simply salted peanuts is preferable.

There are probably hundreds of fudge recipes comprising various other ingredients, but I will stick with plain old vanilla and walnuts.

While you’re reading this, I also understand what you’re thinking. You are thinking about all of the weight I’m gaining. You’re thinking that I am putting on 2-3 lbs per day while overindulging during the holiday season, and I won’t argue or debate the matter. I’ll only say that some things in life are worth the purchase price, and that spring is just around the corner where I will be out sweating and losing weight. I’ll also say that during my annual physical last summer my physician told me to not lose any weight. She said I was at just the right spot with the correct proportion of body fat, although most of it’s located in one place.

Old age does have its problems and the location of fat is close to the top of the list for most of us. I don’t know when that happened, but somewhere along the way things started to settle in one location without fanfare or notice, and now I appear to get stuck with it.

When looking in the mirror I’m somewhat horrified, but the feeling dissipates rapidly as I walk away and see the fudge waiting for me in the kitchen.

What Triggers Grief?

As I watch a country basketball grand final, praying for friends that are playing, just enjoying the competition, something strikes me. That feeling of déjà vu.

We had been there four years ago almost to the day. And this game mattered since I’d close pastoral relationships with some of the players and had been praying a lot for one special player. It was great to wish her the best as the group warmed up.

That night four decades back was one of our more memorable dates we took Nathanael on.

It was a night when he was secure in Sarah’s womb, 28 weeks gestation and developing strong, albeit in deep trouble with abdominal organs crowding lung growth and having been diagnosed with Pallister-Killian Syndrome five months before.

That period was this intense period of our lives.

Not that we could know it on August 29, 2014, but the two weeks after that strength would ramp up. He loathed the support that God had garnered for us in preparing to shed Nathanael. We were aware of the enemy’s schemes. Somehow, everything that has been occurring against us God was using for His glory.

As I watched the Facebook live stream of the 2018 grand final, memories of 2014 flooded back, of the players on the roster back then, one that is now a dear friend even though on the other side of earth, and of the adventure itself. But Sarah was becoming very uncomfortable. It was 17 days since her first amnioreduction process, and she was expected for the next one within days. The issues in our own lives were far larger than that.

As I throw my head back, of the relationships we had with that group, and with many others supporting us, it seems odd to have felt under attack like we were. We knew the fight was not being fought by mere flesh and blood, but in the spiritual realms, in which the powers and principalities rule (or, more importantly, think they do).

And still there’s this despair that we were carrying, and there is the cause of that emotional moment.

In some ways it is very cool, because what we’d give to be back there, suffering what we had been, but to have Nathanael in our possession once again, to feel him kicking, to see him proceeding under ultrasound, these things were phenomenal to us!

So, I am thankful that this was triggered, but it is not necessarily true in grief or trauma is it?

When seriously negative encounters, that transformed, are significant in trauma, we see how those things have changed us. It happens. Stimuli occurs. And next thing you know you are re-experiencing some quite familiar emotions.

For those who have triggers, and if there are particular experiences that put you off, I encourage you to be courageous, find a therapist who’s secure for you, and find out ways of making those encounters part of your total growth. I know you can and will have the ability to do it.
